Pope Leo XIV Outlines Path for Catholic Church That Follows in Francis’ Steps

During his first formal address to Roman Catholic cardinals, Pope Leo XIV emphasized his commitment to continue the work of Pope Francis in leading the church towards a more missionary direction. He highlighted the importance of greater cooperation among church leaders and a focus on serving the marginalized.

Leo expressed his dedication to modernization and referenced a significant document issued by Francis in 2013. He outlined key objectives from the document, such as promoting “growth in collegiality,” fostering “popular piety,” showing “loving care for the least and the rejected,” and engaging in “courageous and trusting dialogue with the contemporary world.”

Referring to the document “Evangelii Gaudium,” Leo praised Francis for articulating these principles effectively.

The new pope also explained his choice of name, drawing a parallel to Pope Leo XIII who emphasized the church’s role in addressing social issues in the late 19th century through the document “Rerum Novarum.”

Leo highlighted how “Rerum Novarum” addressed social challenges during the first industrial revolution, and he acknowledged the new challenges posed by the current era of artificial intelligence.

He emphasized the importance of upholding human dignity, justice, and labor in the face of these new technological advancements.

Leo affirmed that the church would draw upon its social teachings to address these challenges.

In praising Francis, Leo highlighted the former pope’s humility and dedication to service, setting an example for others to follow.

Following the pope’s address, several cardinals also spoke, discussing topics such as “synodality” and the Vatican’s relationship with China.

The cardinals acknowledged the importance of maintaining the direction set by Pope Francis’ papacy.

Cardinal Baltazar Enrique Porras Cardozo mentioned that Leo discussed the continuity of Francis’ pontificate and raised questions about the formation of priests and bishops.

Cardinal Sean Brady noted Leo’s warm interactions with attendees after the meeting.

Following the meeting, Leo made a surprise visit to an Augustinian sanctuary in Genazzano, where he was warmly received by a cheering crowd.
