Play Store code indicates Google is prepping for Android XR headsets
There has been ongoing speculation about Google and Samsung’s plans for “XR” headsets running Android, and a new teardown of the Play Store app reveals that Google is actively working on software support for these devices. While this doesn’t mean the headsets will be released imminently, it does indicate that Google is preparing for their potential launch.
Android Authority delved into the code of the latest APK file for the Play Store interface on Android and uncovered evidence that Android apps can now detect compatibility with an “XR headset” device, similar to how they check compatibility with phones, tablets, watches, and Chromebooks. The presence of an icon representing the device class, depicting a headset in the Oculus style, further supports this discovery.
Although Android serves as the base open-source operating system for Meta’s Quest VR headsets, the heavily modified and locked-down nature of the software sets it apart from the Android experience familiar to most users.
XR headsets, which encompass virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, are envisioned as more agile and wearable devices. Companies like Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm have been exploring this space for some time, although progress has been subject to delays as information trickles out.

Despite the ongoing efforts of companies like Samsung, Google, Microsoft, and Apple to develop a compelling headset or glasses device, no definitive solution has emerged. The quest for the next ubiquitous gadget stems from the saturation of smartphones and tablets in the market, prompting tech companies to explore new form factors to drive sales and innovation.
Furthermore, the pervasive presence of vision-based interfaces in science fiction and video games has shaped the belief among industry leaders that smart glasses or powerful headsets are an inevitable progression in technology.
As the industry anticipates advancements in wearable technology, reminiscent of the excitement surrounding the release of the original Galaxy Gear watch in 2013, the future of smart glasses and headsets remains uncertain yet promising.
With Google’s renewed focus on XR headsets, the tech landscape is primed for further innovation in this space. Whether Google succeeds or not, the pursuit of groundbreaking technology in the realm of VR and AR continues unabated.
