Plastic Egg Spelling Activity | My Baba

Over the years I have used any remaining plastic eggs that we have in some sort activity. I have done a word spinner, a maths one, and a sun catcher as well. This year when I opened up my Easter box I was happily found that I only had a few of them left (hurray). That was until my boss pulled out a box that literally contained 100s of them. I swear one day I will wake up drowning in a sea of colorful plastic eggs. Anyway, on the plus side, it did mean that I had plenty to use for my newest activity; a plastic egg spelling activity.

To do your own plastic egg spelling activity you will need:

• Plastic eggs
• Scrabble/ banana-gram tiles

Find the scrabble tiles of the word you want them to spell out. I tend to go for high frequency words like the, there, what etc.

Put the tiles inside one of your plastic eggs. I normally do about 5-6 eggs each for my charges.

Ask your little one to crack open an egg, then get them to figure out what the word is.

EC found it easier than YC did, I think I need to give him some harder ones. YC managed to get a few without any help, but for others I would offer a prompt. I’ld ask her to find blended sounds like th, or, ee. Or I would get her to find the small words that are hidden within bigger words like IN which is found in thINk or AT found in thAT. When she had those she would then move the other letters around until it spelled out the word we were looking for.

This is a good activity to help with learning spellings but is also a great intro into games like Scrabble, Bananagram and Boggle. All I need to do now is figure out what I’m going to do with all those other plastic eggs.
