People keep falling for fake ‘drones over Jersey’ videos
Recent videos depicting unidentified aerial phenomena flying over darkened US skylines are suspected to be the result of AI manipulation. These videos have caused speculation and fear, with some suggesting they could be experimental technology or even aliens.
Many of the viral videos surfacing on platforms like TikTok appear to be altered using generative AI techniques. Despite this, the videos lack any official labels or disclosures warning viewers about potential digital editing.

Upon closer examination, videos on TikTok and other platforms show signs of AI-generated or digitally manipulated content. Some videos feature strange distortions and unrealistic elements, suggesting they may not be genuine.
Some videos show fantastical scenes, such as a flying saucer-shaped orb over New York City or a “mother ship” hovering over the ocean. Despite their unrealistic nature, these videos have garnered hundreds of thousands of likes, leading many viewers to believe they are authentic.
While some viewers have recognized the fake nature of these videos, many still believe they depict genuine phenomena. The use of generative AI tools makes it easier than ever to create convincing fake content that can be shared on social media platforms.
Platforms like TikTok and X are facing challenges in identifying and labeling AI-generated content. Despite guidelines that encourage users to disclose AI manipulation, many videos lack these labels, leading to confusion among viewers.
X, formerly known as Twitter, has vague rules regarding AI-generated content and its potential impact on users. With the rise of generative AI tools, the authenticity of online content is more difficult to discern, raising concerns about the spread of misinformation.
