After years of speculation, the world’s leading sexual health company, Durex, has finally disclosed the meaning behind its brand name. Durex is renowned for its range of condoms and lubricants, with a history dating back to 1929 when the London Rubber Company first registered the name.

Founded in 1915 by LA Jackson, the London Rubber Company initially sold imported barbers’ condoms and accessories. Fast forward to the present day, and social media users have long debated the significance of the term “Durex,” with many suggesting it stood for “durable sex” or “during sex.”

However, the truth was recently revealed by an Instagram user who correctly identified that Durex stands for “DUrability, REliability, and eXcellence.” Annelie Pennock, Durex’s category manager of personal care, emphasized that the brand has always embodied these values, striving to promote sexual wellness and safety.

As STI rates continue to rise in Australia, Durex remains committed to its mission of encouraging safe and pleasurable sexual experiences. With a focus on real sex that feels good and does good, Durex advocates for open conversations about sexual health and well-being.

The Impact of STIs

According to the World Health Organization, untreated sexually transmitted infections can lead to various health complications, including infertility, neurological and cardiovascular diseases, ectopic pregnancies, stillbirths, certain cancers, and an increased risk of HIV. In Australia, the Kirby Institute reported a concerning increase in syphilis cases, with rates more than tripling between 2013 and 2019.

In 2022 alone, there were 6036 reported cases of syphilis, predominantly affecting males. The rate of syphilis among Australian females also saw a significant rise since 2013. Additionally, chlamydia and gonorrhea infections remain prevalent, particularly among young adults aged between 15 and 29 years old.
