Pakistan Army issues shoot at sight orders as Imran Khan party protest in Islamabad; Four paramilitary personnel and two policemen killed

Violent clashes between supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and security personnel in Islamabad have resulted in the deaths of four paramilitary personnel and two policemen, with over 100 security personnel sustaining injuries. The federal government has deployed the army in Islamabad and issued shoot-at-sight orders to control the situation, as reported by state-run media on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.

The protest by supporters of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) turned violent as they tried to push forward towards Islamabad’s D-Chowk venue, leading to a tense standoff with the government. The situation escalated when a vehicle rammed into Pakistan Rangers personnel, killing four officials and injuring several others on Srinagar Highway in Islamabad. Subsequently, two policemen were also killed in a separate incident in Rawalpindi.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that over 100 security personnel, mostly police officers, were injured during the clashes. The Pakistan Army was called in to deal with the unrest, with orders to shoot miscreants on sight. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the violence and directed authorities to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Despite offering an alternative protest venue to the PTI supporters, the government remains firm on not allowing the protest at D-Chowk. Talks are ongoing with PTI leaders to resolve the issue peacefully.

The PTI accused the authorities of using violence against its supporters, resulting in injuries and fatalities. Imran Khan, who has been in jail since 2023, called for the protest to demand the release of all prisoners, including himself, and other political demands.

The clashes occurred as PTI supporters attempted to reach D-Chowk in Islamabad, facing obstacles along the way. The government had placed barriers to prevent the protest, leading to confrontations and casualties.

Educational institutions were closed due to the unrest, and security measures were heightened to counter any terrorist activities. Imran Khan’s party has alleged electoral fraud and corruption by the ruling parties, leading to the ongoing political turmoil.

The situation remains tense as authorities work to restore peace and order in the capital.
