Orcs no longer evil in D&D Monster Manual
Changes are on the horizon for the orcs in Dungeons & Dragons. These changes have actually been in motion for a few years now. It all started with Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything in 2020, and then the Player’s Handbook in 2024. The upcoming edition of the Monster Manual, set to release this February, will further solidify these changes.
The focus of the change revolves around Orcs specifically, but also delves into the broader concept of race within the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Traditionally, certain races in the game have been labeled as inherently evil, while others are seen as good. Orcs, borrowed from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, were originally depicted as an evil race akin to the corrupted elves in Tolkien’s lore. However, D&D diverged from this by making orcs their own distinct race, albeit one that mirrored the behavior of corrupted elves.
Over time, some players and Dungeon Masters (DMs) began challenging the notion of inherently evil races by creating custom versions of good orcs. The introduction of half-orcs as a playable core race further complicated the issue. Following the global Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, the creators of Dungeons & Dragons felt compelled to reevaluate how race was portrayed in the game.
The shift towards more inclusive and progressive representation in Dungeons & Dragons was influenced by the growing number of diverse players joining the community. One of the lead writers of D&D stated that a majority of players supported these changes. Terms like “race” were replaced with “species,” and Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything removed the link between species and moral alignment. The Player’s Handbook made orcs a fully playable race, and now the Monster Manual will completely redefine the perception of orcs as mere monsters.
