Onimusha: Way of the Sword revealed for 2026!
Capcom is bringing back one of their beloved franchises with the upcoming release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword in 2026! This new game is being developed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The Onimusha series has always combined Japanese history with supernatural elements, offering third-person hack and slash combat with unique “Issen” counterattack mechanics.
In Way of the Sword, players will journey to Kyoto during the Edo period, a time of relative peace shattered by a demonic infestation known as the Genma. The once serene city is now a dark and eerie place, and a brave samurai equipped with the Oni Gauntlet must confront these hellish foes.
Originally released on the PS2 in 2001, the Onimusha series has seen several sequels, a tactics spin-off on the GBA, and even a fighting game. The last main entry was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006, making Way of the Sword a return to the series after two decades. There was also a remaster of the original game in 2018.
Gaming technology has advanced significantly since the series’ inception, with Capcom excelling in remakes and remasters. It will be interesting to see how they preserve the original concept while incorporating modern innovations in Way of the Sword.
