OnePlus has announced that they will not be releasing a foldable phone in 2025. The rumored OnePlus Open 2 has been put on hold for now. Vale G., Product Manager for the OnePlus Open, shared this news on the official forums in a post titled ‘A Note About Our Foldable Strategy for 2025 – Recalibrating for Innovation’.
He mentioned that OnePlus has decided not to launch a foldable device this year after carefully considering their timing and next steps in the foldable market. However, Vale reassured fans that this pause does not mean OnePlus is abandoning foldables altogether.
Pausing, not stopping
While this may come as disappointing news to fans, Vale emphasized that OnePlus will not be leaving the foldable segment entirely. He stated, “…our decision to pause on foldable for this generation does not signify a departure from the category.”
OnePlus’ decision to step back from the foldable space coincides with Oppo’s unveiling of their new foldable offering, the Oppo Find N5, which many expected to be the basis for the OnePlus Open 2.

Oppo’s upcoming foldable is scheduled to launch on February 20. The Oppo Find N5 is the closest thing to a successor to the OnePlus Open in 2025.
Taking off the pressure
Vale praised the Oppo Find N5 in his post, highlighting the two brands’ unified approach to product releases and marketing. This also means that competitors like Samsung will have one less rival to contend with in 2025.
The OnePlus Open 2 would have been the perfect foil to show the next Z Fold up
Samsung’s latest Galaxy S25 series focused more on AI and software innovation rather than hardware improvements. The same is expected for their upcoming foldable, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
In markets where Oppo is not as prominent, like the US, the OnePlus Open 2 would have been a strong competitor to showcase against the next Z Fold, highlighting Samsung’s potential complacency. However, this will not happen now.
OnePlus’ foldable future
With no OnePlus foldable in 2025, questions arise about what the brand’s next folding device will offer. If OnePlus re-enters the foldable market in 2026, it will have been three years since the original Open’s debut. By then, competitors like Samsung, Google, Honor, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo will have further shaped the segment.
It’s possible that OnePlus may draw inspiration from the design of the Oppo Find N5 for their future foldable, as they would have done this year. The plans for Oppo’s Find N6 could also influence the design and feel of the next OnePlus folding phone. Only time will tell.
