Russian strikes on the Ukrainian central city of Pavlograd on Friday killed one person and injured more than 50 others, including three children, authorities said.

Russia has increased its aerial assaults on Ukraine following Kyiv’s unprecedented cross-border offensive into Russia’s Kursk region last month.

Five Iskander ballistic missiles were launched from Russian territory towards Pavlograd in the central Dnipropetrovsk region, as reported by Ukraine’s air force.

According to the interior ministry, one person was killed and 55 others were wounded in the attack.

The assault resulted in “multiple fires in the city”, including in an apartment within a high-rise building, stated regional governor Sergiy Lysak.

Among the injured were a nine-year-old girl and two boys aged 11 and four.

Pavlograd, known for housing a chemical plant that manufactures explosives, is frequently targeted by Russia.

The city is situated approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the ongoing conflict in the neighboring Donetsk region, where Russian forces are making advancements.

Prior to the Russian invasion in February 2022, Pavlograd had a population of around 100,000 residents.

Images released by the interior ministry depicted a severely damaged apartment building, with rescuers working to evacuate its occupants.

Thick black smoke billowed from several windows with shattered glass, while tree branches littered the ground in front of the building.

Earlier in the week, seven individuals lost their lives in a Russian attack on the city of Lviv in western Ukraine.
