Old School RuneScape removes male and female from character creator, adds mandatory pronouns
A recent update for Jagex’s Old School RuneScape has caused controversy among fans. The update removes the traditional male/female sex options from the character creator and introduces mandatory pronoun usage for players.
The new “Diversity & Inclusion” update for Old School RuneScape eliminates the biological male and female sexes from the character creator, replacing them with “Body type A” and “Body type B” options. Additionally, players must now select He/him, They/them, or She/her pronouns for their characters.
Furthermore, all facial hair styles can now be used on either body type. It is important to note that major updates like this one do not require player approval, as they are considered mandatory changes by the developers.
Earlier this year, another “Diversity & Inclusion” update altered the popular “kiss the frog” event in the game, replacing it with a new mechanic where players pat the frog’s head to acquire parts of a Royal frog costume.
Similar changes have been seen in other games, such as Square Enix’s Dragon Quest III HD2D Remake and Nintendo’s Pikmin 1+2 re-release, where traditional gender roles and characteristics have been removed or altered.
Old School RuneScape is accessible for free on Windows PC, Mac, Android, and iOS platforms through the official website and Steam.
