North Carolina Amazon workers vote against unionizing

In a recent announcement, it was revealed that workers at an Amazon warehouse in Garner, North Carolina have voted against unionizing. The results of the election, with 3,276 total ballots cast, showed that 25.3% were in favor of unionizing while 74.7% were against. However, these results are still pending certification by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment (CAUSE), the group advocating for the union, attributed the outcome to what they claim is Amazon’s illegal tactics to discourage unionization. They stated, “Amazon’s relentless and illegal efforts to intimidate us prove that this company is afraid of workers coming together to claim our power.”

On the other hand, Amazon’s spokesperson, Eileen Hards, refuted these allegations, asserting that the company had not violated any laws. Hards expressed satisfaction that the workers in Garner had the opportunity to voice their opinions and opted to maintain a direct relationship with Amazon.

This development comes after successful unionization votes at an Amazon warehouse in Staten Island in 2022 and a Whole Foods location in Philadelphia earlier this year. However, Amazon-owned Whole Foods has requested the NLRB to reconsider the results of the latter. Additionally, Amazon has teamed up with SpaceX to legally challenge the NLRB’s structure.
