Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders delayed in US so Nintendo can "assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions"

As per an official statement from Nintendo, pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the US have been postponed beyond the initial date of April 9. The company is waiting to evaluate the impact of the significant economic policy changes on the market.

The press release states, “Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not commence on April 9, 2025, to assess the potential effects of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will provide an update on the timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged.”

On April 2, President Donald Trump announced a series of tariffs affecting countries worldwide, including Japan and Vietnam. While Nintendo is based in Japan, its manufacturing largely takes place in China and Vietnam. Vietnam, where Nintendo has shifted some production in anticipation of US tariffs on China, is facing a 46% tariff, while China has been hit with an additional 34% tariff. These tariffs could impact the import of the Nintendo Switch 2.

This announcement comes amidst global economic uncertainty, with JP Morgan raising the recession risk percentage to 60%, potentially affecting sales in the US. The tariff announcements have led to economic repercussions worldwide, impacting import and export predictions across various regions.

For American consumers, this could potentially result in a higher retail price for the Nintendo Switch 2 than anticipated, given the current economic climate. This delay in pre-orders leaves uncertainty about the extent of the impact on US consumers.
