Nintendo says Switch 2 backwards compatability was the "best direction" for players, even if it's still staying quiet on which games won't work

The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be backwards compatible, but with a slight caveat that Nintendo has not fully explained yet. The gaming community eagerly awaits more details on this feature.

In the past, Sony faced criticism for lacking backward compatibility between the PS3 and PS4 consoles. The PS5’s backward compatibility was well-received news. Nintendo also faced challenges with backward compatibility when transitioning from the Wii to the Wii U and then to the Switch. With the imminent release of the Switch 2, players are curious about whether they can continue playing their existing game library. The answer is mostly positive, although not all games will be supported. Nintendo seems to be prioritizing player satisfaction with this decision.

In a statement to Game File, Nintendo explained the rationale behind ensuring backward compatibility. The company emphasized the importance of allowing players to access their existing Nintendo Switch games on the upcoming console. While the Switch 2 will support both exclusive and existing games, there may be limitations for certain titles. More information will be provided on the Nintendo website at a later date.

It is speculated that games like Ring Fit Adventure and Labo may not be fully compatible with the Switch 2 due to differences in Joy-Con sizes. Nintendo has not yet disclosed which specific games may face compatibility issues. More details are expected to be revealed during the upcoming Direct event on April 2.

Hopefully, the number of incompatible games will be minimal, as many players look forward to upgrading their consoles. It is also hoped that Nintendo will offer fair pricing for game ports, especially for titles that are not too old.
