New Resident Evil game confirmed, with the director of Resi 7 at the helm

Capcom dropped some exciting news yesterday, teasing us with demos and release dates like a zombie spewing bile. Among the updates was a confirmation from Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi that a new Resident Evil game is in development. While this may not come as a shock given the franchise’s popularity, it’s still reassuring to hear. “It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil] 7,” Nakanishi mentioned, “but I found it. And to be honest, it feels substantial.”
No further details were provided, leaving us to speculate that this could be Resident Evil 9. However, with rumors swirling about potential remakes of Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, it’s unclear which installment Nakanishi is referring to. Although leaks suggest it’s likely Resident Evil 9, tentatively titled Resident Evil 9: Revenant Shadows, there’s been no official confirmation.
In the Capcom Next broadcast, Nakanishi reflected on Resident Evil 7’s return to horror, moving away from the action-oriented gameplay of previous titles. “When we first started development [on Resi 7], Resident Evil was… well, if I’m being honest, as a brand we were off-track,” he explained. “In the end, an RE game has to be scary… the general consensus from fans of the series was that a Resident Evil game is one that should scare the hell out of you. That was the starting point for Resident Evil 7.”
If Nakanishi leads the development of Resident Evil 9, fans can hope for a continued emphasis on horror. While Resident Evil Village had its merits, some felt it leaned too heavily on action compared to the eerie atmosphere of the seventh installment. Personally, I prefer my horror slow and suspenseful, with a minimalistic approach to monsters. As long as it’s dark and tense, I’m on board.
For PC enthusiasts nostalgic for the classics, there’s been recent good news with the original 1996 Resident Evil now available for download on PC. Additionally, Resident Evil 2 and 3 are set to arrive soon on GOG. Unfortunately, there’s no word on Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, the only game in the series with my granny’s name in the title.
