Netflix to Discontinue Support for Some Apple TV Models
Netflix will no longer support second and third-generation Apple TV after 31 July. According to CNET, Netflix has updated its support page for Apple TV, stating that the older models will stop working with Netflix at the end of next month.
The second-generation Apple TV was launched in 2010, followed by the third-generation model in 2012. Despite their similar design to the current 4K model, they lack the power and features, such as only supporting HD and no compatibility with the App Store for Apple TV.
Apple ended all support for the second and third-generation Apple TVs seven years after their launch dates, which were seven and five years ago, respectively. Netflix, like other app makers, has decided to stop supporting these older models due to resource-intensive nature of maintaining compatibility.
Netflix has previously ended support for older TVs and devices like the Vision Pro. It’s unknown when Netflix will phase out support for other Apple TV devices, but given the timeline of previous models, it may not be long before the fourth-generation model meets a similar fate.
