Netanyahu Will Meet Trump in Washington

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel is scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House on Monday, confirmed a White House official. This will be the second meeting between the Israeli leader and the new administration since January.

Mr. Netanyahu’s visit comes after Israel renewed its military campaign against Hamas in Gaza last month, despite attempts by Mr. Trump’s team to negotiate a new truce and release more hostages.

A spokesperson for Mr. Netanyahu did not provide a comment. The Israeli prime minister was recently in Hungary on a state visit, where he met with Hungarian leader, Viktor Orban.

During his previous visit, Mr. Trump outlined a vision for Gaza involving a U.S. takeover and the mass departure of Palestinians from the region. Mr. Netanyahu has since called for what he terms as voluntary emigration by Gazans, a move criticized as effectively forced displacement by some.

Israeli forces have been intensifying their attacks on Gaza and advancing further into the enclave since the resumption of hostilities in late March. Israel has also blocked aid from entering Gaza, potentially exacerbating the humanitarian crisis faced by civilians in the region.

The Trump administration has expressed support for Israel, placing blame on Hamas for the escalation of violence. In turn, Hamas has accused Israel of violating the cease-fire that was brokered with the assistance of Mr. Trump’s aides.
