Nearly 1/3 of Canadians see the U.S. as an ‘enemy’ country: poll - National

A recent poll indicates that 27 per cent of Canadians now view the United States as an “enemy” country, while 30 per cent still consider the U.S. an ally.

Another 27 per cent of respondents see the United States as a “neutral” country, according to the Leger survey conducted between Feb. 14 and Feb. 17.

These findings come amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs on Canada and his suggestion that Canada should become a U.S. state.

The survey involved 1,500 Canadians and 1,000 Americans, and the results reflect a growing discontent with the U.S., especially after Trump’s tariff threats.

Sébastien Dallaire, Leger’s executive vice-president for Eastern Canada, expressed surprise at the division among Canadians regarding their perception of the U.S. as an ally or enemy.

He noted that the level of animosity towards the U.S. is triggering a broader rally-around-the-flag effect in Canada.

Interestingly, only one per cent of Americans see Canada as an enemy, while 56 per cent consider Canada an ally.

However, a significant majority of Canadians (74 per cent) have an unfavourable view of President Trump, with Conservative party supporters more likely to have a favourable opinion of him.

Conservative supporters are also more inclined to view the United States as an ally compared to Liberal and NDP supporters.

There is a clear partisan divide in how people perceive the U.S., with Bloc Québécois voters being the most likely to see the U.S. as an enemy country.

It’s important to note that online surveys like this one cannot be assigned a margin of error due to the lack of random sampling.
