'MYST' Update Brings Stability & Performance Boost to PC VR Version, Quest Patch Coming "soon"

Cyan Worlds has recently released a major 2.0 update for MYST (2020), the VR-supported remake of the classic ’90s point-and-click adventure game. This update brings performance boosts and stability improvements for PC VR users.

In a recent Steam update, the studio announced that many performance issues have been addressed by upgrading Myst from Unreal Engine 4.27+ to Unreal Engine 5.3.2.

Additionally, Cyan Worlds has implemented OpenXR in Myst, moving away from the older OpenVR API. This shift brings stability enhancements, more launch options, and a more flexible VR environment for users.

With this update, users will now see a single launch option that should work for all officially supported headsets, thanks to OpenXR support.

Although Myst can unofficially run on any SteamVR-supported headset, the update no longer offers official support for the original Rift headset, Quest 1 through Quest Link, and the original HTC Vive. The studio mentions that while these headsets can still be used to play the game, official support will not be provided.

Cyan Worlds advises PC VR users that performance may vary based on their hardware, recommending adjustments to supersampling options for optimal experience.

The 2.0 update of Myst also addresses several VR-specific issues, including height change bugs, menu visibility problems, backward movement glitches, teleportation issues, crashes, and visual effects inconsistencies. The update also enhances VR menu bindings for smoother navigation across different SteamVR setups.

While the standalone Quest version is yet to receive similar attention from the studio, Cyan Worlds released Riven (2024) in June, optimized for Quest 3. The studio plans to release a patch for Quest and other platforms in the near future, although a specific timeline has not been provided at this time.
