Markus “Notch” Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has revealed that his next project will be a spiritual successor to the popular game. He even went as far as to say he has “basically announced Minecraft 2.”

Following a poll at the beginning of the year, where Notch asked for feedback on whether to continue his current project or develop a game similar to Minecraft, it was clear that the majority favored the latter option. The poll results showed a strong preference for Notch to create a game like Minecraft, with almost 79% of the votes leaning towards that direction.

Despite working on a retro project for several years, Notch started considering the possibility of creating a game that would serve as a spiritual successor to Minecraft. He acknowledged that while he has a passion for retro-style games, there might be an audience that prefers a modern take on the classic title.

In a follow-up post, Notch confirmed that the poll results have influenced his decision to “basically announce Minecraft 2.” However, he clarified that the new game will have a different name and cannot be too similar to the original Minecraft due to his previous sale of the game to Microsoft.

Notch admitted that creating spiritual successors can be challenging, but he is determined to fulfill the wishes of his fans and create a game that resonates with them. He also emphasized his commitment to respecting the work of the Mojang team and Microsoft’s ownership of the Minecraft brand.

As speculation arises about Notch’s buyout terms with Microsoft and potential noncompete clauses, it is evident that his decision to pursue a new game resembling Minecraft raises interesting questions. Despite any restrictions that may have been in place, Notch is determined to move forward with his new project.

Notch expressed his respect for Microsoft’s handling of the Minecraft IP and acknowledged their support for the studio’s creative direction. Meanwhile, Mojang continues to update and expand Minecraft with new content, and Microsoft is exploring opportunities to further grow the franchise. Additionally, a live-action Minecraft movie is scheduled to premiere in the near future.
