Metrolinx tells Finch West LRT builders to drop legal action and get ‘back to work’

Metrolinx is urging the consortium responsible for the Finch West LRT project, which has initiated legal action, to resolve their differences and focus on the project to avoid delays in the opening of the light rail line in Toronto.

In response to legal action taken by Mosaic Transit Partners, the group contracted to design, build, and maintain the Finch Avenue light rail line, Metrolinx issued a strong statement criticizing the consortium for raising concerns about a deal between Metrolinx and the TTC.

The dispute arises as significant progress is being made on the Finch West LRT project, initially planned for completion in 2023 to connect Line 1 of the Toronto subway to the Humber Polytechnic campus.

Mosaic’s lawsuit alleges that an agreement between Metrolinx and the TTC deviates from the original terms and is hindering the project’s completion.

Until the Finch West LRT project reaches substantial completion, Metrolinx is withholding approximately $500 million from the consortium.

Metrolinx stated, “We are collaborating closely with Mosaic to expedite the opening of the Finch West LRT. The CEOs of Metrolinx, Mosaic, and partner companies meet regularly to address any challenges in project delivery.”

Amidst delays in the Eglinton and Finch West LRT projects, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow has made a plea for the lines to open promptly.

NDP transportation critic Joel Harden criticized the delays in transit construction and called for accountability within Metrolinx’s leadership.

Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner urged the premier to intervene in the contractual dispute over the Finch West LRT to prevent further delays and increased costs.

The government expects all parties involved to collaborate effectively to ensure the timely delivery of the project.

Harden suggested reevaluating contracts and potentially involving new builders to expedite project completion if necessary.

The contract awarded to Mosaic in 2019 includes 30 years of maintenance for the Finch West LRT, complicating any attempts to terminate the deal prematurely.
