Meta VR Studio Behind 'Lone Echo' Shuttered After No New Game Release in Nearly Three Years

Meta’s First-Party VR Studio Ready at Dawn Reportedly Closing Down

Meta’s first-party VR studio Ready at Dawn—, known for developing immersive games like Lone Echo, is reportedly facing closure. The studio, which was acquired by Meta in 2020, has only released one game since the acquisition.

Ready at Dawn gained recognition for its PC VR title Lone Echo (2017) and the popular multiplayer spinoff Echo VR. Following the acquisition by Meta, the studio launched Lone Echo II on PC in late 2021.

Speculation surrounds the reasons for the acquisition, with possibilities ranging from financial support for Lone Echo II to a lucrative offer from Meta that the studio couldn’t resist.

Despite the release of Lone Echo II, Ready at Dawn has not announced any new projects. The studio faced criticism for shutting down Echo VR in 2022, leaving fans questioning its future endeavors.

Reports indicate that Meta has decided to close down Ready at Dawn, leaving both external observers and employees surprised. The closure aligns with Meta’s efforts to reduce spending in its Reality Labs division, despite the studio’s legacy in VR development.

Ready at Dawn’s closure marks the end of a 21-year journey that began with titles for PSP, PS3, and PS4 before transitioning to VR with Lone Echo. The studio’s innovative gameplay and high production quality made it a standout in the PC VR landscape.
