Make a splitscreen-only Splinter Cell, demands Hazelight boss, even as Ubisoft double-down on open worlds

Hazelight founder Josef Fares has suggested that Ubisoft should develop a splitscreen-only Splinter Cell game – a proposal that seems as unlikely as asking Cadbury to make chocolate bars out of soot. Fares believes this concept would be a “guaranteed success.”
While the idea of a splitscreen Splinter Cell game isn’t necessarily bad, Ubisoft’s long-running stealth series has a history of successful co-op gameplay, such as in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory where players could team up for stealthy missions. However, the notion of a splitscreen-only release after such a long hiatus may not sit well with dedicated fans of the franchise. The prospect of such a drastic change could lead to backlash from the community.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Fares expressed his surprise that other publishers have not explored this concept. He emphasized the potential success of a splitscreen-only Splinter Cell game, stating that it could attract a large audience and generate significant sales for Ubisoft. Fares even offered his idea to Ubisoft for free, urging them to consider the opportunity.
For those unfamiliar with Splinter Cell, the game follows the adventures of Sam Fisher, a stealthy operative known for his unique attire and tactics. Sam’s missions involve infiltration, combat, and espionage, all while maintaining a low profile. Despite his unconventional appearance, Sam’s skills and resourcefulness make him a formidable force against his enemies.
Ubisoft has been working on a Splinter Cell reboot, aiming to modernize the series for a new generation of players. However, the lack of updates and recent company restructuring indicate that Ubisoft may prioritize other genres over stealth games, especially those with niche appeal like splitscreen gameplay.
While Ubisoft’s focus seems to be shifting towards online services and open-world games, Fares’ suggestion for a splitscreen Splinter Cell game remains an intriguing concept. Whether Ubisoft will consider this idea amidst their current business strategies remains to be seen.
