Mail app for macOS will soon get an overdue AI upgrade

Apple recently updated the Mail app on mobile devices, introducing intelligent categories to streamline the inbox and enhance content discovery. However, this feature was not available on Mac computers.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his PowerOn newsletter, Mail categories will finally be added to the desktop client in April with the macOS 15.4 update.

The report mentions that the macOS 15.4 update is still a few weeks away, as Apple recently released the third beta of macOS 15.3.

Categories in Mail categorize emails into four classes: Primary for personal communication, Promotions for sales and deals, Updates for social and news content, and Transactions for shopping-related alerts.

Users can customize email categories for individual senders and disable the feature if needed, reverting to the classic List view.

Apple has integrated various AI-driven features into the Mac platform, including Smart Reply, Priority Messages, email summarization, and Writing Tools powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT stack for text composition and refinement.

While the email categorization system has benefits in organizing the inbox, some users have expressed concerns about its rigidity and accuracy. Apple has the opportunity to address these issues based on early feedback before launching categories on the Mail client for Macs.

As noted by DailyTech’ Bryan M. Wolfe, some users have found the categorization system to be complex and have experienced misplacement of emails, highlighting the need for improvements in functionality.
