Macs finally get a taste of an overhauled Mail app

Apple has recently updated the Mail app on iPhones with the iOS 18.2 update, introducing a new design. However, this update did not extend to iPads and Macs at the time. The good news is that Apple has now addressed this with the release of macOS 15.4 and iPad OS 18.4 developer beta updates, which are currently available for testing.

One of the major changes in the new Mail app is the introduction of categories. Your emails are now organized into four categories for better management. Here’s a quick overview of how the categories work:

  1. Primary: Personal messages and time-sensitive content.
  2. Transactions: Confirmation emails, receipts, and shipping-related alerts.
  3. Updates: News, newsletters, and social media updates.
  4. Promotions: Marketing and sales-related emails.

Apple mentions that if emails in the Transactions, Updates, or Promotions categories contain time-sensitive information, they will be moved to the Primary category. Additionally, Apple is implementing a feature similar to social media profiles where messages from specific senders in these categories will be grouped together.

According to Apple, when you open a message from the Transactions, Updates, or Promotions category, a digest view of messages from that sender will be displayed. This allows for a convenient way to view all related messages in a card-like format.

Users also have the option to disable categories and switch to the classic list view that displays emails in chronological order. While the idea of categories is to separate important communication from less relevant content, it may not be perfect for everyone.

The introduction of the updated Mail experience on iPads and Macs addresses a significant issue and provides consistency across different devices. The new interface, which includes the ability for users to create custom categories, has been well-received on iPhones. With the release of macOS 15.4 and iPadOS 18.4 developer beta updates, users can look forward to a unified Mail experience on all their devices in the near future.

Aside from the category updates, Mac users can also benefit from features like email summaries, smart replies, and priority messages within the Mail app.
