Lynx Confirms Android XR For Next Headset, Sony & XREAL Also On-board for Google’s OS
Even though Android XR is not fully open-source at the moment, Google is aiming for the OS to be compatible with multiple partner headsets. Samsung is rumored to be the first to release an Android XR headset, with Sony, Lynx, and XREAL also planning to utilize the operating system.
Meta had previously announced its intention to open up its Quest’s Horizon OS to third-party developers, but the emergence of Android XR now provides another option for headset manufacturers.
According to Google, Sony, Lynx, and XREAL have all expressed interest in adopting Android XR.
It is highly likely that Sony’s SRH-S1 enterprise-focused MR headset will be the first target for Android XR. During our hands-on experience with the headset earlier this year, the company remained secretive about its platform development and content sources. Opting for Android XR seems like a more logical choice for Sony rather than creating its own XR OS and platform.
As for Sony’s current and future PSVR headsets, it is expected that they will continue to be integrated with the PlayStation OS instead of transitioning to Android XR.
The long-awaited Lynx R-1 MR headset has faced challenges in reaching the market, particularly in developing a comprehensive software stack that meets all the requirements of an XR headset.
Lynx founder Stan Larroque informs Road to VR that the R-1 will not be adopting Android XR, but future headsets from the company will. This strategic decision could potentially position the company better in the future by reducing software development expenses and expanding its headsets’ access to a wider range of apps and content.
Regarding XREAL—a company specializing in AR glasses designed to project content from other devices onto a large floating screen—it is not yet clear how they will utilize Android XR. However, it is likely that the operating system will serve as the foundation for the company’s future devices.
While Meta and Google are open to extending their XR OS to third-party headsets, they still control the access. Both Horizon OS and Android XR are not completely ‘open’ at this stage, as only selected partners are allowed to build on either OS.
With both operating systems now in the mix, there is growing pressure for them to strive for greater openness. This push could potentially prompt one or both companies to make their XR OS fully open for everyone to utilize.
