London Knights win battle of OHL conference leaders - London

Logan Hawery and Kasper Halttunen each scored twice for the London Knights as they defeated the Barrie Colts 8-4 on Feb. 13 in a clash between conference leaders in the Ontario Hockey League.

London dominated with 54 shots on the Barrie net, becoming the first team to defeat the Colts in regulation since Jan. 16.

Halttunen finished with two goals and an assist. Denver Barkey contributed a goal and two assists, while Sam O’reilly recorded three assists.

The opening period saw a flurry of offense with a total of 32 shots and four goals between the teams.

Hawery, called up from the GOJHL’s St. Thomas Stars, scored the opening goal just 2:13 into the game in his hometown.

Emil Hemming of the Colts equalized less than a minute later by stripping a puck at his own blue line and scoring a breakaway goal, his 15th of the season.

Halttunen scored two one-timers for the Knights, giving London a two-goal lead going into the second period.

The first of Halttunen’s goals required a review due to its quick entry and exit from the Barrie net.

The scoring continued in the second period as the Colts narrowed the gap twice, only to see the Knights extend their lead each time.

Nicholl’s shot hit the end glass, bounced off Colts goalie Ben Hrebik, and went in at 8:23.

Following that, Landon Sim and Hawery scored 33 seconds apart.

Halttunen set up Sim’s goal by blocking a shot, carrying the puck down the ice, winning the race to the puck, and feeding Sim for his 23rd goal of the season.

London outshot Barrie 54-28.

The Knights went 1-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Marner lifts Canada to opening win at Four Nations Face-off

A game-winning goal doesn’t often start with a 60-foot drop pass, but that’s exactly what led to Mitch Marner’s overtime winner, giving Canada a 4-3 win over Sweden in the Four Nations Face-off opener. Marner received a pass from Sidney Crosby, skated into it as Crosby drew in the Swedish defenders, and scored past Filip Gustavsson.

Marner now joins a list of elite players who have scored OT winners for Canada in best-on-best play, including Crosby, Ryan Getzlaff, Steve Yzerman, Vincent Lecavalier, and Theoren Fleury.
