Leaked VR Controllers From Valve Revive Hope for a Next-gen 'Deckard' VR Headset

Leaked Valve VR Motion Controller and Gamepad Models Surface in Recent SteamVR Update

Recently discovered 3D models hidden within a SteamVR update have sparked excitement among VR enthusiasts, hinting at a potential new VR motion controller and gamepad from Valve. The leaked models, codenamed ‘Roy’ and ‘Ibex’, were uncovered by tech analyst Brad Lynch, also known as ‘SadlyitsBradley’ on YouTube.

Unlike traditional VR motion controllers, the Roy model features a more conventional gamepad-style layout with a directional pad, action buttons, start/select buttons, and bumper buttons. This layout suggests better compatibility with games that utilize standard gamepad controls, potentially positioning Valve’s rumored ‘Deckard’ VR standalone headset as a versatile gaming platform.

Brad Lynch noted that the Roy controller features capacitive touch on every button, potentially aiding in hand skeleton tracking. Speculation suggests that the controller’s UI input may leverage Deckard’s rumored eye-tracking capabilities.

Valve has a history of innovative controller designs, as seen with the ‘Knuckles’ controllers for the Valve Index headset. These controllers offer hands-free interactions and touch pads for UI navigation, setting them apart from traditional VR input devices.

Rumors surrounding Valve’s Deckard VR standalone headset have been circulating since early 2021, with features speculated to include wireless PC VR streaming, eye-tracking, and AR passthrough capabilities. The leaked Ibex controller model, resembling the Steam Deck handheld’s control scheme, further adds to the intrigue surrounding Valve’s upcoming hardware.

While Valve has not officially commented on the existence of Deckard, the recent controller leaks suggest ongoing development of new VR hardware. Data miners remain eager for further insights into Valve’s upcoming releases, following past leaks that revealed the Valve Index headset before its official launch.
