In a recent announcement, Apple has introduced updates to the runtime protection in macOS Sequoia. These updates primarily focus on limiting Gatekeeper controls for users.

Gatekeeper is a security feature on macOS devices that ensures only trusted software can run on MacBooks. When downloading software or apps from sources outside the official App Store, Gatekeeper verifies the developer’s identity and app notarization to guarantee the software’s authenticity. It also prompts users when opening new software to prevent unauthorized execution without their consent.

While Gatekeeper enhances security, users were previously able to override its controls with a simple click to install desired software. However, with the latest update, Apple has restricted users from bypassing Gatekeeper control starting with macOS Sequoia. Users now have to go to the “Privacy & Security” settings to review software information before executing it. This change aims to provide better security and prevent unauthorized access to users’ devices by malicious apps.

Apple has also urged app developers distributing apps outside the App Store to ensure Apple’s app notarization. Notarized software can run smoothly through Gatekeeper, allowing users to use such apps without any issues.

macOS Sequoia is Apple’s upcoming major macOS release, officially announced at WWDC 2024. It is currently available as a public beta release and is expected to power future Apple MacBooks after a potential stable release in late 2024.
