Kolkata Airport Goes Green with LED Airfield Signage to Save Energy and Reduce Emissions, BA
In a move that can save 45 per cent energy and cut down carbon dioxide emissions, Kolkata airport is in the process of switching over to Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) from the conventional Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) for its airfield signage. The INR 6.6 crore project will see a conversion of a major chunk of Airport Ground Lighting (AGL) signage in phases over a span of five-and-a half years (68 months).
LED technology offers superior efficiency with 50,000 hours of operational life and consumes 90 per cent less power than the conventional bulbs. Used at night and in case of low visibility during the daytime, AGL signage offers directional guidance to the pilots for aircraft positioning and navigation during taxiing operations.
These feature two categories: mandatory instruction signs with white text against red backgrounds, and information signs. This type of signage includes information on Runway Designation; Category I, II, or III Holding Position; Runway-holding Position; Road-holding Position, and No Entry Zone.
Information signage is provided where there is an operational need to identify a specific location or routing (direction or destination) information. These include information on direction, location, runway exit, runway-vacated, and intersection take-off.
“Kolkata airport is committed towards environmental sustenance by maximising the usage of green energy and energy-efficient equipment. We are fast approaching to turn the city airport into a 100 per cent LED Airport,” said an airport official.
LED lights provide additional operational advantages in airfield applications, including reduced dirt accumulation and enhanced protection against water and dust. Their robust construction minimises electronic failure risks during aircraft landings. “These lighting systems demonstrate exceptional durability with extended service life compared to traditional alternatives. Their construction provides enhanced resistance to physical damage from routine maintenance activities, including snow removal and surface cleaning operations,” an official said.
The LED installations maintain reliable performance in various weather conditions, ensuring consistent operation throughout the year, making them ideal for critical aviation infrastructure requiring continuous operation. Last year, Kolkata airport was accredited with ACI (Airport Carbon Accreditation) – ACA Level 2 certification for actively reducing carbon dioxide emissions at the airport.
The ACA is a well-recognised global programme in the aviation industry, demonstrating an airport’s commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.
Among the other green initiatives, the airport authorities have switched over to LED fixtures for apron flood lighting, environment-friendly refrigerant gas at central AC plants and AC units, provided an automated baggage handling system. It has also introduced battery-operated vehicles in the airside as well as battery-operated buses and cars in the cityside, and solar-powered belt loaders.
