Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez, Golf Hall of Famer, Passes Away at 88
Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez, a legendary golfer known for his on-course charisma and inspiring life journey, passed away on Thursday at the age of 88.
The news of Rodriguez’s death was confirmed by Carmelo Javier Ríos, a senator from Puerto Rico, where Rodriguez was born.
No specific cause of death was provided.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan paid tribute to Rodriguez, highlighting his exceptional golf skills and dedication to charitable endeavors.
Born Juan Antonio Rodriguez in Puerto Rico, Rodriguez grew up surrounded by sugar cane fields and began playing golf at a young age by hitting tin cans with a makeshift club.
He later became a caddie and quickly mastered the game, boasting an impressive skill level by the age of 12.
Rodriguez went on to have a successful professional golf career, winning eight PGA Tour events and 22 Champions Tour titles.
Known for his entertaining on-course antics and celebratory dances, Rodriguez left a lasting impact on the sport.
After surviving a heart attack in 1998, Rodriguez shifted his focus to philanthropy, founding the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation in Florida.
In his later years, he remained active in the Puerto Rican community, engaging in various projects and events.
Rodriguez is survived by his wife Iwalani and stepdaughter Donnette.
