J.C. Escarra makes Yankees' Opening Day roster

TAMPA — J.C. Escarra’s remarkable journey from Uber driver to the major leagues has reached its pinnacle.

The Yankees have officially announced that Escarra will be joining the team as a backup catcher, marking the 29-year-old’s debut in MLB in the upcoming weeks.

Escarra, who played for various independent league teams in 2022 and 2023 after being released by the Orioles, worked odd jobs such as being an Uber driver, substitute teacher, and food delivery person to make ends meet. Despite his challenges, he has excelled both offensively and defensively during spring training.

He boasts a batting average of .333 and an OPS of .936 in 17 games leading up to Saturday.

Known for his strong framing skills, Escarra has garnered praise from pitchers for his work behind the plate.

General manager Brian Cashman commended Escarra, stating, “He’s done a great job. He’s continued what he did last year and into winter ball and now into spring training.”

The Yankees plan to have three catchers on their 26-man roster, with Escarra serving as a backup to Austin Wells, while Ben Rice is likely to see more at-bats as a designated hitter.

Despite all three being left-handed hitters, the Yankees prioritize skill over handedness.

Escarra edged out Alex Jackson, who was at camp as a non-roster invitee following an offseason trade from the Reds involving catcher Jose Trevino and reliever Fernando Cruz.

Tanner Swanson, the director of catching, praised Escarra’s talent and energy, saying, “He’s extremely skilled, extremely talented on both sides of the ball. What really has stood out beyond that is just the energy he brings. How engaged he is with the pitching staff, I think he’s really developed a rapport there that is required.”
