It’s time to say goodbye to the Nintendo 3DS, as the last player to still be online finally loses connection more than 200 days after servers went down
It has finally happened: the last surviving online Nintendo 3DS player has lost connection, signaling the end of an era.
The past few years have been tough for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U fans. Last year, both consoles’ eShops closed down, and earlier this year, online services for the platforms were also discontinued. However, a few users managed to hold on, including Fishguy6564 and Marioiscool246, who set up bots to continue playing online. Unfortunately, Marioiscool246’s 3DS crashed earlier this year, leaving Fishguy6564’s bot to play alone.
After 210 days since the servers were shut down, Fishguy6564’s 3DS finally crashed today. “It’s over,” they announced on their Twitter account alongside a picture of the error message on the 3DS. “Rest in peace, Nintendo Network.” It’s remarkable that the connection lasted for so long after the official shutdown, but it’s also a sad realization that an era has come to an end.
The owner of the Nintendo Network After Hours Discord, GaffsNotLaffs, shared that Fishguy6564’s 3DS simply “crashed,” which is surprising considering its longevity. With the 3DS now offline, there is no official way to play its games online, rendering many features and modes unplayable.
This loss is disappointing, especially with no indication that Nintendo plans to make these titles playable on the Switch. Nintendo’s preservation practices have always been questionable, and the 3DS will be missed.
