An individual who identified as a U.S. Army veteran and was driving a pickup truck displaying the flag of the Islamic State group caused chaos during New Orleans’ New Year’s celebration, resulting in the death of 15 individuals. The driver bypassed a police blockade and intentionally drove into the crowd before being shot and killed by law enforcement officials.
The FBI has launched a terrorism investigation into the incident, which occurred early on January 1, 2025, and suspects that the driver did not act alone. Upon searching the vehicle, authorities discovered firearms and what appeared to be an improvised explosive device, along with additional suspicious devices in the city’s French Quarter.
President Joe Biden revealed that videos posted by the driver on social media prior to the attack indicated his inspiration from the Islamic State group and his intent to cause harm. The tragic event transformed Bourbon Street into a scene of devastation, with numerous casualties and injuries reported. The nearby college football playoff game was postponed as a result.
Witnesses described the horrific scene, with one individual recounting how the truck plowed through the crowd, causing chaos and panic. New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick condemned the act as an act of evil and stated that the driver intentionally bypassed safety measures to cause harm.
The FBI identified the driver as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. citizen from Texas, and is investigating any potential ties to terrorist organizations. The authorities uncovered multiple improvised explosives, including pipe bombs, in the aftermath of the attack.
Jabbar drove onto a sidewalk, evading a police car blockade, and opened fire on officers upon exiting the vehicle. He was subsequently shot and killed by law enforcement. The investigation also includes deadly explosions in Honolulu and near a Las Vegas hotel owned by President-elect Donald Trump.
The attack serves as a stark reminder of the potential for violence using vehicles as weapons and represents a significant IS-inspired assault on U.S. soil. President Biden condemned the act and expressed solidarity with the victims and the city of New Orleans.
The incident underscores the ongoing threat of international terrorism, with the FBI issuing warnings about potential attacks in recent months. The nation mourns the loss of life and stands united against all forms of violence.
