Iran’s top diplomat cautioned against outside interference in Syria’s future, emphasizing that decisions should be made by the Syrian people themselves. Abbas Araghchi expressed these sentiments in an article published in Chinese State media during his visit to Beijing on Friday (December 27, 2024).

Upon his arrival in Beijing, Araghchi embarked on his first official visit to China since assuming the role of foreign minister. Both China and Iran were supporters of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.

Following Assad’s recent departure from Syria after losing control of multiple cities to an Islamist-led offensive, Iran stressed the importance of allowing the Syrian people to determine their own future without interference or imposition from external forces.

Iran’s supreme leader, a staunch supporter of Assad, expressed confidence in the Syrian people’s ability to overcome challenges and maintain security in the country.

During his visit, Araghchi highlighted Iran’s commitment to supporting the Syrian people and respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also underscored the need for all parties to consider the principle of supporting the Syrian people.

Suitable time

China, which has established a strong partnership with Assad, has voiced its support for the Syrian people and condemned terrorist activities in the region.

Araghchi’s visit to China will involve discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, with the aim of strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries. China is Iran’s primary trading partner and a significant purchaser of its oil despite international sanctions.

During a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Russia, Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to enhance cooperation with Iran. Araghchi noted that the timing of his visit was particularly appropriate given the current regional tensions and international challenges, including Iran’s nuclear issue.
