iPhone 17 Pro could be the first to offer 8K video recording

The upcoming iPhone 17 series is set to launch in approximately six months, and new details about the handsets are starting to surface. The latest leak pertains to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models.
According to Fixed Focus Digital (via MacRumors), the iPhone 17 Pro series is rumored to support 8K video recording. This aligns with previous rumors suggesting that the iPhone 17 Pro models will feature three 48-megapixel rear cameras: a Fusion, Telephoto, and Ultra Wide camera setup, which is ideal for generating 8K images.
In comparison, the current iPhone 16 Pro series offers 48-megapixel Fusion and Ultra Wide cameras, but its 12-megapixel Telephoto lens limits video recording to 4K resolution.
Among the latest smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and OnePlus 13 also support 8K video recording.
Understanding 8K Video Recording
Recording videos in 8K resolution offers several advantages and some drawbacks. 8K captures a significantly higher level of detail than 4K, resulting in sharper and more realistic videos, especially on larger displays. The higher resolution also provides greater flexibility during post-production, allowing for cropping or zooming without compromising image quality.
However, 8K videos require substantial storage space and processing power, which can impact phone memory, battery life, and potential overheating issues. Additionally, since 8K displays are not widely available yet, the benefits of higher resolution may not be fully appreciated by most users.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max later this year. The Pro models are likely to feature a new rear camera design with a camera bar spanning the phone’s width, positioning lenses on the left side and other components like the microphone, flash, and LiDAR on the right side.
