India’s Strikes in Kashmir and Pakistan: Photos and Video

A scene of a plume of smoke covering the vibrant sunrise in the Himalayas and men carrying a coffin past soldiers at a damaged mosque paints a grim picture of the ongoing military conflict in Kashmir. The beauty of the region has been marred by heavy shelling on both sides of the territory divided between India and Pakistan. After days of escalating tensions, a cease-fire was finally agreed upon on Saturday.

The conflict began with India striking sites on the Pakistani-controlled side of Kashmir and areas within Pakistan on Wednesday, followed by Pakistan launching drone attacks along India’s western border on Friday. Both sides suffered casualties in the clashes.

India’s military action was in response to a terrorist attack on the Indian-controlled side of Kashmir on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. India has accused Pakistan of harboring terrorist groups responsible for the attack, a claim that Pakistan denies.

Although the fighting has ceased for now, the road to recovery for the residents living along the border will be long. Kashmiris are grieving the loss of their loved ones, with casualties reported on both sides of the conflict. Tens of thousands of people remain displaced from their homes in border villages.
