In response, the Kerala government has announced ₹5 lakh ex gratia compensation for the families of deceased individuals from the State and ₹1 lakh for the injured. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh has arrived in Kuwait to oversee assistance for the Indian nationals affected by the tragedy.

Indian community in Kuwait

India has a significant presence in Kuwait, with nearly a million NRIs residing there. The relationship between the two countries has been historically friendly, with Indians comprising 21% of Kuwait’s population and 30% of its workforce. Despite challenges faced during the Gulf War, the Indian population in Kuwait has remained resilient and continues to contribute to the country’s development.

While strategic partnerships between India and Kuwait are currently lacking, efforts are being made to enhance the bilateral relationship. Several agreements and MOUs are in the process of finalization, including the Bilateral Investment Promotion Agreement.

Understanding the Gulf Cooperation Council

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) consists of six nations – Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain. Established in 1981, the GCC aims to promote coordination and integration among member states, primarily driven by oil exports as a key revenue source.

Significance of Indian communities in GCC countries

The GCC region plays a crucial role in India’s economy through inward remittances and trade. The Indian diaspora in the Gulf region contributes significantly to India’s economic development, with remittances from NRIs serving as a vital source of income. Efforts are being made to strengthen diaspora-centric policies for the welfare and protection of Indian nationals in the GCC countries.

India’s trade with GCC countries has been steadily increasing, with discussions underway for a Free Trade Agreement. The government is also focusing on energy cooperation and renewable energy initiatives with GCC nations to further enhance bilateral relations.
