For the first time, India and Sri Lanka on Saturday (April 5, 2025) signed a significant defence cooperation pact, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake leading discussions on a wide range of topics. The pact outlines a comprehensive plan for enhanced bilateral cooperation, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the security of both nations.
Among the seven key agreements signed during the talks, the defence pact stands out as a major step towards strengthening strategic ties between the two countries, marking a significant milestone nearly four decades after the Indian Peace Keeping Force’s involvement in Sri Lanka.
In a media statement, PM Modi highlighted the shared security interests of India and Sri Lanka, expressing gratitude to President Dissanayake for his understanding of India’s concerns. The leaders also discussed the development of Trincomalee as an energy hub and virtually inaugurated the Sampur solar power project, emphasizing the benefits these agreements will bring to both countries.
President Dissanayake reiterated Sri Lanka’s commitment to not allowing its territory to be used against India’s security interests, acknowledging India’s assistance and solidarity in times of need. The grid inter-connectivity agreement between the two countries was also highlighted as a significant step that will enable Sri Lanka to export electricity.
PM Modi reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s special place in India’s Neighbourhood First policy and Vision ‘MAHASAGAR’, noting the progress in cooperation since President Dissanayake’s visit to India four months prior. The talks took place following PM Modi’s attendance at the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok, where he was honored with a ceremonial welcome at the historic Independence Square in Colombo.
