Former British Prime Minister David Cameron stated on Monday (October 21, 2024) that India has the credibility to act as a mediator in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Cameron made these remarks at the NDTV World Summit held in London, just a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to visit Russia for the BRICS Summit.
“India is in a position to mediate in the Ukraine war,” Cameron said, highlighting PM Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Cameron emphasized the importance of any efforts that could lead to a resolution of the conflict. “However, it is crucial that any mediation respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence,” he added.
“While India may have the potential to mediate, it must ensure that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not resort to territorial aggression,” Cameron stressed.
The former British PM also advocated for the expansion of the U.N. Security Council and advocated for India to have a permanent seat at the table. “The world has undergone significant changes since the establishment of these institutions after World War II, necessitating a reset,” he explained.
“Considering the rise of India, which is poised to become the world’s largest economy at some point in this century, a reset is imperative, with countries like India playing a central role,” Cameron remarked.
Cameron acknowledged that reshaping multilateral institutions would be a lengthy process and commended India’s participation in organizations like the Quad and the G20.
