I no longer care about Grand Theft Auto 6, for I have the open world of Vivat Slovakia

After spending some time with the early access build of the open-world game Vivat Slovakia, I have come to the realization that it may not be the GTA 6 killer I had hoped for. While this disappointment bothers me slightly, I must admit that Rockstar’s confident attitude can be quite annoying, even though I know I will still play their game for hours on end. Vivat Slovakia is an ambitious tribute to the Grand Theft Auto series, not afraid to show its inspiration, right down to the font choices. I’m not sure if you should play it, but I do feel enriched by discovering its existence. Watch the trailer below.

Vivat Slovakia is described as “an open-world action game set in ’90s Slovakia, where corruption is rampant and law enforcement is weak.” You take on the role of Trotter, a taxi driver who also works as an undercover cop. The game now features full English voice acting, which, while not necessary, adds to the overall experience. The current early access build, named ‘Side A’, is the first part of the game.
Starting off with taxi work, you quickly learn how to drive. In just a few short customer interactions, Trotter discusses bribing cops and makes derogatory remarks about a journalist. There is a gritty and intriguing quality to the game that is both repulsive and captivating. It hints at a potential for unexpected and fascinating developments in the storyline.
Some other aspects I enjoyed include the presence of five different radio stations, the realistic damage to your car’s headlights when you crash, and the unique reactions of different passenger groups in the introductory mission. Additionally, the tutorial on using a sniper rifle involves shooting someone attempting to escape Czechoslovakia, which, while in poor taste, is oddly commendable. Here’s a glimpse into the game’s narrative:
Immerse yourself in a storyline inspired by real events, delving into themes of loyalty, corruption, and power struggles. Players will uncover intricate relationships and shifting alliances in a world where politics and crime often intersect.
Each mission mirrors the historical conflicts of the ’90s, from secretive state operations to underground dealings that shaped the nation. Professional voice actors bring this compelling storyline to life, enhancing immersion and intensifying the fight for survival and integrity.
Once again, this is not a direct recommendation, but I appreciate the effort of developers to take on Rockstar with a limited budget, regardless of the outcome.
