Hyundai Ioniq 5 sets world record for greatest altitude change

Since its launch in 1955, the Guinness World Records (GWR) book has been a source of settling disputes with facts and figures in U.K. pubs. Over the years, it has become a comprehensive collection of world records, both big and small, such as the largest grilled cheese sandwich.

This year, Hyundai took on a more serious challenge with the GWR’s 2024 theme centered around the “Blue Planet” and a focus on the natural world. The South Korean automaker aimed to set a new world record for the greatest altitude change experienced by an electric vehicle (EV).

To achieve this record in December, Hyundai had an Ioniq 5 EV descend 19,035 feet during a 3,000-mile journey across the Indian peninsula. This surpassed the previous record set by China’s Changan Nevo A07 EV. The Ioniq 5 started its journey in the Himalayas at India’s highest drivable point and finished in a coastal region below sea level.

Throughout the two-week journey, the Hyundai EV faced harsh terrain and extreme weather conditions, showcasing its engineering prowess and durability. The Ioniq 5 is equipped with a 72.6 kWh battery, providing a driving range of over 300 miles.

As the record was achieved, the 2025 Ioniq 5 began being delivered in the U.S. The new model features a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, allowing for quick charging with a Tesla SuperCharger.
