Honor Magic 7 Pro Camera Review: The Ultimate Camera Phone?
The Honor Magic 7 Pro, the latest offering from Honor, aims to stand out in the competitive camera phone market by combining cutting-edge mobile hardware with a host of new AI-enhanced features.
One area where Honor has focused is on the phone’s upgraded ‘Falcon Camera System’, which includes a revamped telephoto sensor and a new AI Super Zoom feature, allowing users to capture shots from greater distances than ever before. The phone also boasts AI enhancements for portrait photography, action shots, and image editing tools.
After testing the phone in various settings, including the beaches of England’s south coast and the Slovenian Alps, I have gained insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the Magic 7 Pro’s camera. I will explore whether the new AI features help Honor surpass competitors like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, or if mobile photographers should consider other options.
If you’re interested in purchasing the Honor Magic 7 Pro, the phone is now available for purchase directly from Honor. However, I recommend reading our full review before making a decision.
Camera Hardware
Upon examining the camera hardware of the Honor Magic 7 Pro, I noted that it utilizes a similar set of sensors to its predecessor, the Honor Magic 6 Pro. The phone features a large 1/1.3-inch 50Mp Omnivision sensor with OIS and a dual ƒ/1.4 to ƒ/2.0 aperture, allowing for improved low-light performance and light capture.
Additionally, the phone includes a 50Mp ultrawide sensor with a 122° field of view and a new 200Mp telephoto sensor with OIS. The Magic 7 Pro offers enhanced zoom capabilities, with native 3x magnification and a lossless 6x sensor crop option.
Other features include a 50Mp sensor within the ‘Magic Capsule’, a 3D ToF sensor for biometric face unlocking, and more.
Camera Features
The Honor Magic 7 Pro introduces the AI Super Zoom feature, which enhances shots beyond 30x magnification using AI to fill in missing details. The phone also offers Studio Harcourt color tuning, a new AI Enhanced Portrait mode, and an Action mode for capturing fast-moving subjects.
The new HD Super Burst feature freezes fast motion and enhances image quality using AI processing. The phone’s portrait mode now supports various zoom levels for added flexibility.
Telephoto Samples
The Honor Magic 7 Pro excels in capturing telephoto shots with vibrant colors, detailed images, and effective HDR processing. The phone’s zoom capabilities up to 6x maintain optical quality, but beyond that, lighting conditions become crucial for good results.
AI Super Zoom can enhance photos but may lead to artificial-looking results at higher zoom levels. The phone performs well with natural subjects but struggles with manmade structures in terms of AI processing.
Portrait Mode Samples
The Magic 7 Pro’s portrait mode offers flexibility across different focal lengths and includes Harcourt tuning for dynamic results. The phone provides various color profiles for different portrait effects, with adjustable bokeh levels.
The new AI Enhanced Portrait mode enhances portrait shots using on-device AI models for better results. The mode offers subtle improvements without altering the original features significantly.
Macro Samples
The Magic 7 Pro features automatic macro mode for close-up shots and a dedicated Super Macro mode for reducing lens distortion. The phone produces high-contrast results suitable for social media but lacks the authenticity of dedicated macro lenses.
Burst Mode Samples
Honor’s Action mode captures fast-moving subjects, while HD Super Burst mode provides sharp imagery at up to 10fps. The phone offers improved motion and sharpness in burst mode images, with consistent color capture.
General and Low-Light Samples
The Honor Magic 7 Pro delivers solid performance in well-lit conditions with pleasing colors and HDR processing. However, the phone may over-expose bright scenes slightly, requiring manual adjustment.
In low-light scenarios, the phone struggles with color saturation and banding, necessitating the use of the Night mode for better results. The phone’s low-light performance lags behind competitors and requires user intervention for optimal shots.
AI Eraser
Despite its emphasis on AI, the Honor Magic 7 Pro offers minimal post-capture AI functionality. The AI Eraser feature allows for easy object removal but may produce mixed results at times. The tool is effective but falls short compared to similar features on other flagship phones.
Are the Honor Magic 7 Pro’s Cameras Any Good?
The Honor Magic 7 Pro’s Falcon camera system leverages AI processing to capture impressive shots, but the results may not always reflect the actual sensor output. The phone’s AI features enhance images but may alter pixels to achieve desired effects.
Overall, the Honor Magic 7 Pro offers a versatile camera system with advanced features, albeit with some limitations in low-light performance. Users comfortable with the AI-driven enhancements will find the phone to be a solid option in the camera phone market.
