Hogwild drama unfolds as hero teen Caleb Morris thwarts unhinged groundhog's attack on jogger

A groundhog in New Jersey targeted a jogger but was stopped by a quick-thinking teenager.

The incident occurred on July 19 when Cait Lostan encountered the aggressive groundhog on a trail behind the Bernards Township Police Department.

Lostan shared her experience on the BaskingRidgeMoms Facebook group, explaining how the groundhog charged at her when she made a phone call on speakerphone, causing her to kick and scream to defend herself.

The jogger threw her phone at the groundhog, which then started chewing on it.

Caleb Morris, a student at Ridge High School, witnessed the commotion and realized the jogger needed help. He assisted her by calling 911 after she had lost her phone to the groundhog.

Morris was surprised by the groundhog’s aggressive behavior and suspected it might be rabid. He described the moment as if he was witnessing content suitable for viral YouTube videos.

Despite the potential for fame, Morris chose to focus on helping the distressed jogger.

The jogger continued to defend herself against the groundhog’s attacks, with Morris noting that groundhogs can scream loudly, making the situation even more unsettling.

“I never thought that a groundhog could be as aggressive as this one,” Caleb remarked, suggesting the possibility of the animal being rabid. J.C. Rice

With Morris’s quick thinking, the authorities arrived and found the groundhog still chewing on the jogger’s phone.

Mayor Jennifer Asay of Bernards Township recognized Morris for his heroic actions by issuing a proclamation on September 10.
