Help Jackie and Shadow name their bald eagle chicks

If you had the chance to name two bald eagle chicks, what would you choose? Talon? Sam Eagle? Leslie? Your choice could become a reality.

Jackie and Shadow, the famous bald eagle pair on the internet, are seeking your help in naming their two surviving eaglets. Entries are now open until Friday, March 28 at 11:59 pm PST and can be submitted through the Friends of Big Bear Valley website. The Big Bear Bald Eagle Live Nest Cam runs 24/7 thanks to Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit that streams ad-free and relies on donations, including the naming contest.

To enter the contest, it will cost $5 for one name entry, $10 for three name entries, or $25 for 10 name entries.

Keep in mind to choose gender-neutral names as the sex of the chicks is currently unknown. Also, ensure the names are suitable for all ages (no explicit or offensive language) to avoid automatic disqualification. A computer will randomly select a final list that will be sent to students at Big Bear elementary schools. Typically, local third graders choose the final names, but this year, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will have the honor due to recent events with Jackie and Shadow’s eggs.

The names chosen by the students will be revealed on April 1 after a secret ballot vote, with the announcement made on FOBBV’s official Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube pages. If your name suggestion is picked, you’ll receive a certificate of recognition.

It has been an eventful journey for the thousands of viewers following the live cam this year. Chick 1 hatched on March 3, followed by Chick 2 on March 4, and Chick 3 on March 8. Unfortunately, a snowstorm on March 13 led to the loss of one chick, leaving two surviving eaglets, temporarily known as Bigger Chick (BC) and Smaller Chick (SC).

The passed chick has been named Misty in memory of Kathi Misterly, an FOBBV volunteer who recently passed away. The surviving chicks are now awaiting their official names.

Spirit was the name given to Jackie and Shadow’s 2022 chick. Now, it’s your turn to submit your favorite names for the two new eaglets.
