Half-Life 2: Episode 3 could have featured an ice gun and blob monsters, as seen in new documentary footage
Valve recently marked the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2 by updating the game with new features and releasing a documentary. In the documentary, members of the development team reflect on their work on the game, including the never-released Episode 3.
The documentary showcases in-progress footage of Episode 3, revealing an ice gun and a new liquid enemy type. The ice gun allowed players to create cover using ice, freeze enemies, or create an ice path to slide along. This weapon was thematically fitting as Episode 3 was set to take place partly in the Arctic.
The discussion of Episode 3 features concept art and test footage, showcasing the ice gun and the blobs, a new enemy type that could change shape and maneuver through environments by absorbing other entities.
Despite the potential of these new elements, Valve developers eventually shifted focus to other projects, leaving Episode 3 unfinished. Various reasons for this decision were cited, including fatigue from working on the Half-Life series, doubts about episodic game formats, and the desire to explore different game concepts.
Gabe Newell expressed regret over not completing Episode 3 and acknowledged the importance of fulfilling gamers’ expectations. However, he also struggled to see how the game would push the series forward creatively.
While some developers felt it was necessary to conclude the cliffhanger ending of Episode 2, others believed in the need for innovation and exploration of new ideas. Despite the disappointment of not seeing Episode 3 come to fruition, Valve continued to produce successful games in different series.
The anniversary documentary offers a glimpse into Valve’s development process and includes footage of abandoned projects like Arkane’s Ravenholm. Additionally, Valve has shared various videos on their YouTube channel, showcasing demos from different events over the years.
