Gov. Josh Shapiro and Family Evacuated After Arson at Pennsylvania Residence

Authorities in Pennsylvania have apprehended a 38-year-old man from Harrisburg for allegedly setting fire to the governor’s mansion while Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were asleep. The incident resulted in the evacuation of the family early Sunday morning, with significant damage to part of the building.

The suspect, identified as Cody Balmer, reportedly entered the building by jumping a fence and evading state troopers. He used homemade incendiary devices in the arson attack and was later arrested in Harrisburg. Balmer is facing charges of attempted murder, arson, and terrorism.

Governor Shapiro, speaking at a news conference, mentioned that the FBI is assisting in the investigation. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.

Governor Shapiro became emotional while recounting the harrowing experience his family endured during the attack. He emphasized that the incident was targeted and condemned the violence, stating, “This type of violence is not OK.”

The governor expressed gratitude for the support from the FBI and the president in the aftermath of the attack.

The State Police reported significant damage to a portion of the governor’s residence due to the fire set by the suspect.

Governor Shapiro highlighted that the attack occurred on the first night of Passover, a holy Jewish holiday, and reaffirmed his commitment to celebrating faith openly.

Law enforcement officials described a chaotic scene at the mansion during the early hours of the morning.

Governor Shapiro, a former state attorney general, has previously been targeted by threats. The governor’s residence is a significant historical landmark in Pennsylvania.

Recent incidents of violence against political figures have raised concerns among the public, although research indicates a decline in extremist violence in the United States.
