Gov. Hochul just won't give up on the failed congestion-pricing scam

Despite Governor Kathy Hochul’s optimistic belief in the power of persuasion, her congestion-pricing tolls are still met with criticism. She recently rode an MTA bus to an event where she touted congestion pricing as a success, even in the face of President Donald Trump’s deadline to stop collecting tolls.

The day after receiving a 30-day extension on the deadline from federal Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Hochul remains confident that she can persuade Trump to support the tolls. However, the tolls continue to be unpopular among working and middle-class individuals.

While the tolls may reduce traffic into Manhattan, they have also been criticized for disproportionately affecting lower-income individuals. A luxury chauffeuring service CEO noted that his wealthy clients are unaffected by the tolls, while others struggle to afford the $9 fee.

Additionally, Hochul is considering increasing the “payroll mobility” tax to address the MTA’s financial challenges, further burdening businesses and workers in New York City. This approach contrasts with other potential solutions, such as cracking down on fare evasion, reducing unnecessary spending, and addressing bloated budgets.

Instead of focusing on initiatives like providing inflation rebates to New Yorkers, Hochul should prioritize sustainable solutions for the MTA’s financial stability. Bribery and empty promises do not constitute effective leadership.

It’s time for Hochul to address the root causes of the MTA’s financial woes and prioritize the needs of everyday New Yorkers over political showmanship.
