Google Cloud To Implement MFA As A Mandatory Feature

Google Cloud users will soon have to use multi-factor authentication, as Google mandates MFA. The transition will be phased to facilitate users.

Google Cloud MFA Is To Become Necessary In 2025

Google has decided to make multi-factor authentication (MFA) a necessary login feature for Google Cloud users by 2025.

According to Mayank Upadhyay, VP of Engineering and Distinguished Engineer at Google Cloud, the new requirement will be gradually rolled out starting November 2024.

In Phase 1, Google Cloud users will receive reminders and information about MFA adoption. Phase 2, starting in early 2025, will require all users to enable MFA for account logins. Phase 3, by the end of 2025, will extend MFA to federated users as an optional feature.

Google’s decision is driven by the increase in phishing attacks and credential thefts. Reports show that users with MFA enabled are significantly less likely to be hacked. Therefore, Google believes mandatory MFA implementation is crucial for securing Google Cloud users.

Users can enable MFA in their Google Account profile under the “Security” menu by enabling 2-Step Verification and setting up an additional authentication method.
