Google Boosts Bug Bounty Rewards to Attract Researchers

In a recent announcement, Google revealed that it has raised the rewards for its bug bounty program by five times.

The Google Vulnerability Rewards Program (VRP) has always been a lucrative opportunity for security researchers to earn rewards for their findings. However, with the increasing security measures in Google products, finding bugs has become more challenging. To acknowledge the efforts of researchers, Google decided to increase the rewards.

Under the new reward limits, researchers can now receive up to $101,010 for reporting a high-severity remote code execution vulnerability. For exceptional reports, Google applies a 1.5x modifier, resulting in a maximum reward of $151,515.

The 1.5x modifier applies not only to remote code execution reports but to all bug reports. This means that researchers have the potential to earn even higher payouts for exceptional findings. Google provided some examples of the new rewards:

Example Vulnerability New Reward Old Reward
Logic flaw leading to an accounts.google.com @gmail.com account takeover ($50,000 * 1.5) = $75,000 $13,337
XSS on idx.google.com ($10,000 * 1.5) = $15,000 $3,133.70
Logic flaw disclosing PII on home.nest.com (a tier 1 acquisition domain) ($2,500 * 1.5) = $3,750 $500

While the 1.5x modifier is for exceptional reports, Google also provides a 1x increase for good-quality reports and a 0.5x increase for low-quality reports.

Google has also made changes to the application tiers for its bug bounty program to provide more transparency for researchers. Those interested can find more details on how to apply.
